Ankh Jewellery
The Ankh was one of the most popular ancient Egyptian protective amulets and one of the most widely used symbols. As a hieroglyph it represented the word "life" or the "breath of life" and it appeared with this meaning in every form of art throughout ancient Egyptian history. The gods and goddesses of ancient Egypt were often depicted carrying an ankh in their hands or holding out an ankh in a blessing and it was an important protective amulet used during the ritual of mummification. However, there is still some debate regarding the origin of the ankh. It may represent a sandal strap, a ceremonial girdle, male and female reproductive parts or depict the sun on the horizon casting a shadow before it. Whatever its original meaning it was certainly one of the most enduring and favoured magical symbols of ancient Egypt.
