Eye of Horus Jewellery
The Eye of Horus was one of the most popular and ubiquitous protective symbols of ancient Egyptian mythology. It was known to the ancient Egyptians as the "Wadjet" (or "Ujat") meaning "Whole One" referring to the myth that the storm and chaos god Set tore the left eye of the hawk god Horus from his face and it was magically restored by Thoth, the god of learning. In this respect the Eye was a symbol of health, regeneration and protection. The ancient Egyptians were the first to paint eyes on the prow of their boats to magically protect them. The constituent parts of the Eye of Horus were also used to represent the fractions and to record the proportions of ingredients in incense and perfume recipes and medicinal remedies.
The two Eyes of Horus were originally thought to have been the sun and the moon, but over time the left eye (the moon) was associated with Horus and the right eye (the sun) was associated with Ra. One myth tells that Ra became angry with mankind for breaching his laws and sent his "Eye" (in the form of Sekhmet the lioness) to destroy humanity. However, when he saw the destruction she was causing he repented and begged her to stop. However, Sekhmet was in a blood frenzy and would not listen. The only way to prevent the total destruction of mankind was to fool her into drinking beer which had been stained red until she was so drunk she fell asleep for three days. The "Eye of Ra" was thought to protect the pharaoh in battle and was linked with numerous protective goddesses such as Wadjet, Nekhbet, Bast, Hathor, Sekhmet, Mut and Tefnut. In this sense the Eye was a terrifying destructive power which could be wielded against an enemy and a powerful force for protection.
